The Everywhen Experience
The Everywhen Project is a non-profit dedicated to supporting sustainable community development in the Black Rock Desert. Every year, the desert transforms into a vibrant convergence of camps and villages, brimming with art, music, and community spirit. We are engaged in an ongoing experiment in temporary community, through building a hub called Constellation City (CC). Constellation City is a centralized camping and services zone that's created every 4th of July and provides its residents with critical infrastructure, including safety teams, restrooms, workshops, activities, a temple, and cooked meals. We emphasize treading lightly and leaving no trace, ensuring a safe, fun, and environmentally conscious event. With amenities like shade, seating, and a volunteer Ranger team, we make your journey and experience in the desert much easier. This allows you to fully enjoy the environment, make friends, and immerse yourself in the magic of the Black Rock — a very special place on Earth with its own calling. Have you heard of Sedona? Black Rock is like that.
Our commitment to stewardship includes a deep passion for leaving no trace and protecting the playa for future generations. Our sustainability practices include upcycling, reuse, shared community power grid, the use of eco-friendly materials, and workshops on responsible resource use. By providing baseline infrastructure, we ensure that these communities thrive in a safe and sustainable environment, with a much lower lift. The Ranger team is always available to offer help, information, tips, and support, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Isn’t it nice not to worry about having bathrooms in the middle of the desert? By handling the baseline needs, we free you to focus on what truly matters—connecting with the community, engaging in art, and experiencing the unique beauty of the Black Rock Desert. We believe in creating a legacy of environmental mindfulness and communal care at the Black Rock Desert.
Creating Temple Ceremonies
People cherish the Evening Ceremonies at Constellation City, a tradition that honors our roots as temple builders at that other thing in the desert. These ceremonies hold a special place in our hearts, embodying our commitment to "Nourish the Spirit," an ethos we live by, not just a catchy tagline.
So, what does it take to create a ceremony for the Everywhen Temple? It all starts with identifying what we want to achieve. For example, our opening ceremony welcomes people to the event on the first day, giving them an idea of what to expect during the week in the Black Rock Desert. Key elements include the founders' torch walk, which gathers energy, focuses intention, and begins the journey for everyone gathered in and around our desert city.
A lot of research and collaboration goes into planning these ceremonies. Our spiritual practitioners work hard to make them welcoming to all, easy to participate in, and hopefully a bit educational. We strive to honor the ancestors of this special dry lake bed, a place sacred to many over countless lifetimes. In this harsh desert environment, we aim to unplug from the modern world and reconnect with ourselves and each other. This digital detox is a core part of the Everywhen experience, allowing attendees to fully immerse themselves in the moment and nourish their spirit.
Our ceremonies reflect this intention. We look up to the stars and the moon just as those before us have done since the beginning of time. Standing around a fire, surrounded by temple towers under a dark, starry sky, with no phones, amplified music, or distracting lights, helps us connect deeply with our ancestors who lived without such luxuries. We incorporate ideas from ceremonies around the world, intentionally adopting practices that scale, are sustainable, reusable, and accessible for all visitors of the Everywhen. Nourishing the Spirit is a vital ethos for us, and we believe in creating intentional spaces to facilitate those inner experiences.
Months before we arrive at the Black Rock Desert, we engage in numerous phone calls, emails, and small in-person excursions to gather supplies and brainstorm ideas. We start by asking, "What does this ceremony hope to achieve? Who or what do we want to focus on?" We discuss and research the herbs for the fire offering, other needed items like crystals, tokens, or musical instruments, and how they will be used. We consider the interactive elements for attendees, ensuring accessibility for all. Ceremony leaders and participants are identified, and traditions are combined respectfully and appropriately. After writing down the plan, it is reviewed and edited as needed.
Feedback from previous years helps us refine our ceremonies. Much like the infrastructure we bring, these ceremonies are a gift to attendees, aiming to provide a meaningful experience. We always welcome anyone who wants to assist with our temple ceremonies. All you need to do is talk to one of our ceremony leads. Diversity in spirituality, much like everything else, is a beautiful and creative thing.
